About Prescription Lenses at Smart Vision Shop

Reading Lenses

Reading LensesReading lenses are single vision lenses that are tailored to customers' individual prescription as well as normal reading distance. Normal reading distance would be distance around 30 cm from your eyes. This is the distance at which you would hold a book/phone/tablet or be positioned sitting and looking at the office desk.

Reading Lenses, are not "readers" that you buy from pharmacy store. They are custom made lenses to your prescription and also to your PD measurement. PD measurement is puppliary distance, distance between your eye pupils, that can be different for right and left eye.

Most of people over 40 years old need reading glasses because the close up vision tends to deteriorate causing eye strain and for some even headaches.

Distance Lenses

Distance LensesDistance lenses are single vision lenses that are tailored to customers' individual prescription and puppliary distance to correct distance vision. People of any age, and especially over 40, may have issues seeing far objects or read text on distant signs. There are many reasons that affect distance vision. It could be age related wear and tear, head trauma or simply most common genetic reason.

Computer Lenses

Computer LensesComputer lenses are single vision lenses that are tailored to customers' individual prescription and puppliary distance to correct intermediate vision. As computer became more frequently used than a book, so did the need for corrective lenses. When looking at a computer, you would normally sit further away from the screen than from the book. It would be a distance around 50-60 cm. If you have trouble reading a book, you most likely will have trouble reading from a computer screen as well. Computer lenses are convenient to be used for computer for prolonged periods of time. They ease the eye strain and prevent headaches.

Progressive Lenses

Progressive LensesProgressive lenses, also commonly referred to as bi-focals or tri-focals, are lenses that correct both far and near vision. In other words these are both reading and distance lenses in one. Progressive lenses allow clear vision with smooth transformation from far to intermediate/computer/ to reading distance.
High quality progressive lenses are made to individual prescription, puppliary distance and height. Height is a portion for break down the reading portion of the lens. It is a special measure that can only be taken having specific glasses on specific customers' face. Depending on the positioning and width of your nose bridge same glasses frames can sit higher on your face than on other person.

Manufacturing of high quality progressive lenses requires advanced technology and complex precise calculations.

Lenses Coatings

Lenses coatings are special coatings that improve lenses durability, vision corrective function or surface quality. There are four major coatings and packages of them under different brand names.

Anti-glare coating reduces the outside glare from the light making your vision sharper and undistracted. This coating also makes lens look clearer and more transparent to people who are looking at you.

Scratch resistant coating makes lenses more durable and less susceptible to wear and tear.

UV Protection coating protects your eyes from harmful UV rays.

Hydrophobic coating makes your lenses easier to clean and reduces dirt smudges from the lenses.

Essilor Crizal is the most known Essilor proprietary coating that combines the above 4 coatings under one package.

Nikon HTC is most known Nikon proproetary coatings that combines the above 5 coatings under one package.

Lenses Index

Lenses index is a thickness measure of the lens. Depending on your prescription you may benefit from higher index lenses.

1.5 Index is the basic index of the lenses that works well for prescriptions under +/- 2.00

1.59 Index is second index level that works well for prescriptions between +/- 2.25 and +/- 3.00

1.6 Index is the third index level that works well for prescriptions between +/- 3.00 and +/- 4.25

1.74 Index is the last and the thinnest index level that works well for prescriptions over +/- 4.50

If your prescription is within first level, but you are getting semi-rimless glasses, you will benefit from upgrading to 1.59 Index lenses becase these are also Polycarbonate lenses. Polycarbonate is a stronger lenses material that keeps your lenses safe from chipping. Since the semi-rimless glasses only have frames around the lens on the top, the bottom and sides of the lense will not be protected.

Other index lenses are not polycarbonate. 1.6 and 1.74 index lenses will be close to as strong as polycarbonate if your prescription falls into the recommended bracket.
